Altra Federal Credit Union

History

Altra was state-chartered in 1931 as Trane Employees Credit Union in La Crosse, WI, with assets of $187.00 and 33 original members, including Rueben Trane. Over the years, services expanded well beyond the La Crosse, WI, area and membership eligibility expanded to include more than Trane employees. In 2005, the credit union was renamed Altra Federal Credit Union. The name was chosen to reflect the increased diversity of our membership while honoring our history by combining the words alliance, Trane, allegiance, and tradition. Today, Altra serves members in all 50 states and locations worldwide. Altra’s total assets have grown to over $2.5 billion, and our total membership over 139,600.
Besides offering a full range of products & services, we make our members’ financial wellness a priority with programs and resources that allow them to maintain and grow their financial wellness. Altra gives back $1 million organization-wide each year to the communities we serve. We invest in our employees through training, education, health and wellness benefits and providing time and space for employees to give back to their communities during the work day. We also invest in a solid culture of innovation and experimentation, innovative products and services and commitment to helping our members live their best life.
In 2022, Altra was featured in the World’s Greatest television show highlighting the ways we take care of our members, employees, and the communities we serve that make us one of the World’s Greatest organizations. Altra made the lists for both Forbes Best in State and Bankdash 100 Best Credit Unions in America. In addition, we received first place awards from the Wisconsin Credit Union League for our commitment to youth and adult financial education and community service. We further received first place nationally for our youth education efforts. Plus, we were voted the Best Financial Institution in La Crosse County, Winona, MN, Rochester, MN, Clarksville, TN and Tyler, TX. Lastly, we continue to be a Great Place to Work™ Certified Organization and Fortune Best Workplaces four years running. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for Altra!
