For 75 years, Alabama ONE has been more than a financial institution — it has been a trusted partner woven into the lives of the people and communities it serves. What began in 1951 with seven members, $35, and a cigar box has grown into a statewide cooperative rooted in the timeless belief of people helping people. Through decades of growth, expansion, and transformation, our commitment to service, trust, and financial opportunity has remained unchanged. This is the story of how a small credit union built on humble beginnings became Alabama ONE — serving nearly 100,000 members across Alabama while staying true to the heart of who we are.
History
What began with seven people, $35, and a King Edward cigar box has grown into something far greater than anyone could have imagined. On September 21, 1951, seven charter members each contributed $5, and with that humble act, TRW (Tire and Rubber Workers) Federal Credit Union was born — rooted in the hardworking spirit of the BF Goodrich Tire Plant in Tuscaloosa, AL. In 1973, the credit union was renamed BF Goodrich Employees Federal Credit Union, and grew into a trusted cornerstone of the West Alabama community. From the very beginning, this was never about transactions. It was about people helping people — showing up for first savings accounts, first cars, first homes, and all the moments in between that turn a place into a community.
As Alabama’s needs grew, so did we. Our first expansion beyond Tuscaloosa County came in 1997 with a move into Carrollton, followed by obtaining Community Credit Union status in 2001, which opened our membership and set the stage for broader growth. In 2009, following a merger with Alabama Mental Health Credit Union, we became Alabama ONE Credit Union — a name that reflected our expanding purpose and our commitment to communities well beyond our corporate origins. In 2020, Alabama Rural Electric Credit Union joined our family, extending our services to Alabama’s 23 rural electric cooperatives and their 600,000 members. Mergers with Brewton Mill Federal Credit Union and McIntosh Chemical Federal Credit Union, along with acquisitions of First Bank of Linden and First Bank of Wadley, and new branches throughout rural Alabama. Our expansion has always center on our unwavering mission: to bring meaningful financial services to the people and places that need them most.
From a cigar box to a statewide cooperative serving nearly 100,000 members, we remain committed to being a trusted partner to the communities we call home — built on a foundation of trust, service, and financial security for all. Seventy-five years later, the faces have changed, the footprint has grown, and the services have evolved, but the heart of who we are has not. Alabama ONE is here — rooted, reliable, and ready. ONE. Together. Since 1951.
