AmeriCU Credit Union

History

Our credit union was chartered in 1950 as the Griffiss Air Force Base Credit Union. We operated out of a desk in the Headquarters Building at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY and serviced only civilian members. As we grew, our charter was amended to include military personnel and an expanded field of membership. We also increased the variety of products and services offered. We then became Griffiss-Oneida Federal Credit Union.
In 1985, Griffiss-Oneida Federal Credit Union merged with DeWitt First Federal Credit Union in Syracuse and our name was changed to Up State Federal Credit Union. In 1988, we merged with Fort Drum Federal Credit Union.

In 2000, we transitioned from a federal charter to a New York State community-chartered credit union and formed AmeriCU Credit Union. Throughout 2022, our focus has been to connect our members with the right financial services to meet their needs. In July of 2022, we launched Live Chat on our website. This convenient new feature allows members to instantly connect with an AmeriCU representative. We installed Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs) in each of our financial centers. Our ITMs operate similarly to an ATM but can also conduct nearly any transaction that could be made at the teller line, including talking to a real, live teller right from the ITM! We also launched a new credit card program which connects cardholders to even greater rewards and card management tools. We continued to improve our service to our business members as well by offering affordable lending solutions. AmeriCU was the first credit union in New York to have a business member approved for the Excelsior Linked Deposit Program. This program allows us to help strengthen small businesses by making borrowing less expensive.

AmeriCU’s Mortgage team, Credit Card Sales team, and Business Development team provide our members the right financial services to Live Life, Dream Big, and Achieve Financial Success. As a full-service financial institution, AmeriCU offers members a range of financial solutions through AmeriCU Investments and AmeriCU Insurance Services. AmeriCU serves over 157,000 members, have 20 locations located throughout central and northern New York, and offer a complete line of financial services – including savings, consumer and real estate loans, credit cards, online banking, kiosk services, access to a nationwide CO-OP ATM network and more.
