BECU’s rich history has always centered on community. Since 1935, we’ve operated as a member-owned financial cooperative whose purpose is to bring people together to improve the financial well-being of our members and communities. What started as 18 Boeing employees joining forces to create what became Boeing Employees’ Credit Union has developed into one of the nation’s largest credit unions with more than 1.5 million members.

History

During the height of the Great Depression, new Boeing employees had to purchase their own tools before they could begin work — but finding the money to do this was often difficult. To help their fellow workers, a small group of Boeing employees came together to form their own credit union and offer loans. By 1952, BECU had 12,000 members, and by the following year, we had $1 million in assets.
We continued to grow, and in 1995, we expanded to establish the BECU Foundation with a $1 million endowment to embody our “People Helping People” philosophy. Over time, through community partnerships, the opening of numerous Neighborhood Financial Centers, and the launch of becu.org and our mobile app, we’ve been able to expand our reach across the Pacific Northwest and into South Carolina with $29.4 billion in total assets.
Through offering competitive rates, free financial education and experienced advisors, we’ve always remained committed to our mission to help people achieve financial freedom, regardless of where they are on their financial path.
