Christian Financial Credit Union began more than 70 years ago as St. Jude Parish Federal Credit Union in Detroit and has since grown to serve the entire metro Detroit area with nearly 60,000 members.

History

Christian Financial Credit Union was originally founded to support the members of St. Jude Parish in Detroit, working to meet the needs of parishioners and fill gaps in services that banks did not provide to persons of modest means. The credit union was founded by John J. (Pat) Sumners, and Richard Quigley Sr., who were both parishioners at St. Jude Parish. Mr. Sumners had strong organizational skills as a leader in the Letter Carrier’s Union. Mr. Quigley was an Executive with General Financial Company, and he brought numerous finance skills to the credit union. The credit union’s original location was in the basement of a home near the church, and original membership was limited to parish members.

Initially the credit union was only open to members of St. Jude Parish. During the 1970’s and 80’s, the credit union began expanding its field of membership as common bond provision regulations reduced in stringency. During this time, the credit union was able to open to other parishes and schools in the area.

In 1998, upon the merger of Northeast Catholic and SERF Credit Unions, Christian Financial opened up as a community charter to those who live, work, worship or attend school in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb or St. Clair counties in Michigan. Today, the credit union continues to draw members from our community, local businesses and churches to fulfill our original mission, with nearly 60,000 members and over $800 million in assets.
