Since our inception as an educators’ credit union in 1958, Georgia United Credit Union has proudly served Georgia families, helping enrich the lives of our communities while providing a safe and secure place for members to save and borrow money. Georgia United also provides community service and social responsibility programming through the Georgia United 501c3 Foundation, a public charity.
History
Georgia United Credit Union was originally incorporated on April 8, 1958, as the DeKalb County Teachers Federal Credit Union by Vernon E. Carne to form a credit union to encourage thrift and offer savings and loans to school system employees at reasonable rates. In October 2010, the credit union converted to a Georgia state-chartered credit union and has evolved to serve not only educators but 81 geographic areas in Georgia. From those simpler days to today’s fast-paced digital world, we are constantly making improvements to meet members’ financial needs and goals.
We have a rich history that includes being one of the first four credit unions in the country to pilot share draft checking accounts in the 1970’s. And, while payment systems like checks have certainly evolved into a world of digital wallets, mobile and online banking, our top priority is keeping members’ funds safe and sound. From combating fraud and offering improved ways to keep accounts secured, we provide a wide variety of financial products and services for every stage of life. When children are ready to learn the basics of finance with their first savings account, to credit cards and first-time homebuyers’ loans, to investment and retirement accounts, we are here to empower our members financial future.
Georgia United has assisted many smaller credit unions over the years, which has led to 24 separate merger partnerships over our 67-year history and allowed our branch network to expand across the state. Our charitable giving arm, the Georgia United Foundation (www.gucufoundation.org) supports our communities by providing continuing education scholarships, School Crashers improvement projects for underserved schools, Junior Achievement financial and career training, and Wish Tree program for foster children.
