Granite State Credit Union was founded in 1945 as Utility Workers Credit Union. For 80 years, we have built a foundation on our core values - Respect, Integrity, Commitment, Innovation and Passion – as we serve NH residents and businesses along their financial journeys.
History
Granite State Credit Union (GSCU) was founded in 1945 by John Grace as Utility Workers Credit Union, originally serving employees of Manchester Transit and Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH). The name Granite State Credit Union was officially adopted in 1979, coinciding with its merger with the VA Hospital Credit Union. In 1988, GSCU expanded its field of membership to include anyone who lives or works in New Hampshire, broadening access to its growing range of financial services.
Over the years, GSCU has steadily expanded its footprint across the state. The Chestnut Street branch opened in 1992, followed by acquisitions of Central Contoocook Valley and Sprague Electric Credit Unions. In the 2000s, growth included a new branch in Candia, the Manchester Harrison St. Drive-up, and the acquisition of Webster Valve Credit Union in Franklin. GSCU joined the Shared Branching Network in 2004 and added locations in Nashua and Amherst through the acquisition of Acorn CU. The Concord branch opened in 2008, followed by the current Manchester branch at 1415 Elm Street in 2009. Continued expansion brought new branches to Derry (2013), Tilton (2014), Nashua (2021), and Rochester (2022). In 2022, GSCU was quick to blaze a trail in innovation, becoming one of the first in the state to introduce Interactive Teller Machines (ITMs)—a move that blended technology with human service to meet evolving member needs. You will find these ITMs in all GSCU locations today.
In 2025, GSCU celebrates its 80th anniversary. The credit union is guided by the same values that have defined GSCU for eight decades. These values have helped the credit union take the steps to become an even better, bolder credit union, proudly serving more than 54,000 members, managing over $730 million in assets, supporting over 120 charities each year, and operating eight full-service locations with a dedicated team of more than 150 employees today.
